Published to accompany a major exhibition at the National Gallery of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2009 and 2010, Robert Frank’s Looking In: The Americans celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of this prophetic book. Drawing on newly examined archival sources, it offers a fascinating in-depth examination of the making of the photographs and the construction of the book, using early contact sheets, working prints, and letters that literally trace Frank’s cross-country journey on a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1955/56. Curator-editor Sarah Greenough and her colleagues also explore the roots of The Americans in Frank’s earlier books, which are lavishly illustrated here, and in books by photographers Walker Evans, Bill Brandt, and others. The eighty-three original photographs of The Americans are presented in sequence in the earliest prints available. The catalogue concludes with an examination of Frank's subsequent reinterpretations and deconstructions of The Americans, bringing the story of this resounding entry in the annals of photography full circle.
