Each summer from the late 1990s into the early 2000s, the acclaimed photographer travelled from her San Francisco home to Kings Canyon, a wilderness where she spent time with a herd of horses. These encounters became Megalith-Still: portraits of the herd imbued with deep tenderness and a powerful physical presence.

“The horses sleep lying down, their legs twitching, their mouths wrapped around blades of grass. Flies are drawn to their moist, blinking eyes. I am as close as I can focus, examining their faces, tails, hooves and bellies, spellbound by the sensuality of the horses and the place.

“I am in a meadow high in the Sierra Nevada. Channels of the San Joaquin River weave through thick, lush grass. I take off my shoes and socks, roll up my trousers and wade through the shallows to where the horses are grazing. They trace a pattern mysterious to me, circling the meadow, eating, drinking and sleeping.

“In the late afternoon, the horses abruptly leave the meadow in single file. I run after them through a bog of thick mud and dead trees and branches that scratch my arms. They trot and gallop, moving faster than they have all day. I cannot catch them. When I reach the bank of the main river, I see the last horse cautiously enter the deep, fast-moving water and slowly float to the other side.” — Mimi Plumb
