For thirty years, Eugène Atget photographed historic Paris: its buildings and monuments, old streets and civic spaces, public parks and gardens. Except in his earliest photographs, he chose not to represent a place with a single definitive image, instead producing sequences of related photographs that create a cumulative portrait.
Through case studies of archetypal urban settings, this book examines Atget's approach to photography. It presents 240 photographs, almost all previously unpublished, assembled to show the integral relationship between his working method and subject matter, revealing the character of Le Vieux Paris.
A natural companion to The New Press's Berenice Abbott: Changing New York, Eugène Atget grew out of an exhibition mounted in response to Abbott's work and reflects the two photographers' shared vision.
