Salvador Costa (Barcelona, 1948–2008) was the photographer behind one of the definitive photobooks on the international punk phenomenon. In spring 1977, at the invitation of his cousin Jordi Valls, he witnessed its explosion in London first-hand. Over a few days he attended as many concerts as possible at venues such as the Roxy, where his camera documented not only performances by Cherry Vanilla, The Cortinas, Generation X, The Jam, Johnny Moped, The Lurkers, Models, The Police, XTC and The Stranglers, but also the audiences, who became the undisputed protagonists of his photographs — including Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols hanging out.
On returning from London, Costa showed his work to Juan José Fernández, who published it that same year through Producciones Editoriales under the title Punk. It was the eighth publication in the Especial Star Books series, which included only two books devoted to photography; the other, Disparos, documented the hippie movement of the 1960s.
