Following in the footsteps of classic films such as The Maltese Falcon and The Lady from Shanghai, veteran photographer Fred Lyon creates high-contrast images of San Francisco infused with mystery. In this latest book from the photographer behind San Francisco: Portrait of a City 1940–1960, Lyon adopts a darker tone, exploring his hometown's hidden corners. Images made on foggy nights are lit only by neon signs, classic car headlights, apartment windows or street lamps. Elegantly dressed couples head to evening shows, drivers descend steep hills and sailors work through the night at the old Fisherman's Wharf. Many photographs are stylistically experimental: double exposures, collage elements and blurred movement enhance the noir atmosphere. These strikingly evocative duotone images reveal a San Francisco only Fred Lyon could capture.
