Ricardo Cases's third book deals with an unusual subject: the practice of pigeon racing in the Spanish regions of Valencia and Murcia, a game that consists of releasing a female pigeon while dozens of males chase her, trying to get her attention. None of them ever become too close, but the winner is the one who spends the most time near the female. The winner is not the most athletic, the toughest, or the purest breed, but the most courteous, the one who shows the most perseverance and has the strongest reproductive instinct: the male.

Breeding a male champion implies prestige and profit. Painted in a combination of primary colors, like a flag or a soccer jersey, the male pigeon raised and trained to mate becomes a projection of the pigeon fancier, embodying his sporting, economic, and sexual success or failure in the community. Far from the harsh reality of his daily life, the pigeon fancier has a second life in which he can reach the top. He only needs a champion pigeon. The fancier remains on the ground, while his projection can fly.

This photographic series examines play as a symbolic act, a projection, and a way of relating to the world. A group of men running through the field behind their pigeons, observing their mating, discussing the rules and refereeing… It refers to the ethnographic documentation of the rituals of remote tribes or to the group of children who invent a game while discovering the world.

The third edition features new changes compared to the previous two editions: one image has been replaced by the next in a sequence, and the back cover features a new list of racing pigeons.
