Loss, love, family: French artist Sophie Calle explores major themes that affect our everyday lives by questioning our conventions and beliefs. In this book, she turns her attention to personal advertisements published in various media between 1895 and 2019. Selected by the artist herself and arranged by decade, the advertisements from women seeking men and men seeking women reveal the qualities most valued in both sexes and show how romantic expectations have changed over time. Calle thus develops a distinctive sociological perspective on the evolution of relationships between men and women, imbued with the poetry and humour characteristic of her work.
A selection of detachable vintage advertisements and two sheets of transfer images, allowing each reader to personalise their copy, accompany and lend rhythm to this unusual catalogue of love.
Conceived in collaboration with the publisher Cent pages, the book continues a series of publications produced jointly with the artist since M’as-tu vue, published by Atelier EXB/Éditions Xavier Barral. With this publication, Sophie Calle also pays tribute to the artistic rapport she shared with Xavier Barral for many years.
