Nakaji Yasui (1903–1942) was one of Japan's leading photographers in the first half of the twentieth century, initiating the New Photography Movement with colleagues in the Kansai region. His avant-garde approach left an indelible mark on the golden age of pre-war modernist photography, working in styles ranging from Pictorialism to photomontage.
Despite his importance to Japanese photography, especially in relation to the broader fine arts, few original Yasui prints survive today. These photographs were originally published in 1942, the year of his death. As his final publication, produced when Japan's war effort had made many materials scarce, original copies are exceptionally difficult to find. This collotype portfolio brings together six of his most famous works from the original portfolio, bringing them back to life for contemporary viewers.
