Nevin Aladağ’s Sound of Spaces is the most comprehensive publication to date on the artist’s multidisciplinary practice, bringing together works that explore the relationship between sound, image, space and cultural identity.
Published in connection with her major exhibition at Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, the book surveys more than two decades of Aladağ’s work, from early video pieces to her recent sound sculptures, installations, performances and textile works. Her practice is rooted in the transformation of everyday objects and environments: furniture becomes musical instruments, architectural spaces become resonating bodies, and ordinary materials acquire unexpected voices.
Music Rooms, Resonators, Social Fabric, Body Instruments and her video works demonstrate Aladağ’s distinctive ability to move effortlessly between sculpture, photography, performance and sound. Her approach is playful and often humorous, but beneath this apparent lightness lies a sustained investigation into migration, multiculturalism, urban space and the ways different cultural histories can coexist.
The photographic reproductions are particularly important here, translating works that are fundamentally spatial, performative and acoustic into a book form. Rather than functioning simply as documentation, the images create their own visual rhythm, allowing the reader to experience the strange combinations of objects, patterns, bodies and instruments that define Aladağ’s work.
Sound of Spaces is an engaging introduction to one of the most original artistic practices working between contemporary art, music and visual culture today. A richly illustrated monograph that demonstrates how sound can become a way of thinking about place, memory, identity and the spaces we inhabit.
