In the 1990s, photographer Joan Fontcuberta decided to intervene in Soviet space history with Sputnik: The Odyssey of Soyuz 2, a project that took him seven years and was first shown to the public in Madrid in 1997.

It recounts a tragic episode in the fascinating history of space exploration: the disappearance of cosmonaut Ivan Istochnikov in mid-flight in 1968, the victim of a failed operation.

A tragic episode… invented by Fontcuberta. Two simple exercises are enough to reveal the strategies he deployed in this work: compare his face with Ivan Istochnikov's and translate his name into Russian.
