Each of Tokyo's railway stations has a unique character that goes beyond its appearance. Its individual architecture, track layout, materials and the rhythm of arriving and departing trains all come together to form a personality. For his photobook Station, Takeshi Shinoda examined Tokyo's railway stations like an archaeologist, uncovering not only the physical details, stains and patina that characterise each one, but also the memories and sensations of the people who, invisible to the eye, have become part of the place's atmosphere. His careful, evocative photographs invite us to examine the physical reality of familiar everyday places, our relationship with them and the lasting traces we leave upon them.
