"The Green Mantle" is a photo collection by Japanese female photographer Hamaji Kazuko. Hamaji Kazuko, who studied under Yamazawa Eiko, a pioneering female photographer active since before the war, worked closely with Yamazawa on everything from commercial photography to exhibitions and photobook production. She traveled to Europe in the early 1960s to study German photography, and after returning to Japan, she taught at Kobe Yamate Women's Junior College of Art, while also holding solo exhibitions with Yamazawa and editing and designing Yamazawa's photobooks. This book was first published in 1970.
Hamaji's first photo book, published in 2013, is a collection of still lifes created with a "toy" motif. His home was littered with dolls and toy animals, and he enjoyed delicate emotional interactions with them. Hamaji created these unique works, hoping that expressing himself through toys would speak to his outlook on life and his sense of photography. This work was created with the hope that "children and mothers would see it."
