In 1983, Shunji Dodo, who had previously focused his photography exclusively on Osaka, was invited to Bangkok by Japan-based American filmmaker Byron Black: "Bangkok is an interesting city, like Osaka. Let's go there together." Over the following thirty-five years, Dodo photographed the city with his beloved Rollei camera. This book presents a selection of 291 images.
Through Yoshihisa Tanaka's editing and art direction, time and space become abstract within the book. Measuring 225 × 225 × 33 mm, it is perfectly suited to Dodo's 6×6 medium-format photographs. Screen-printed surfaces, the book's physical presence and Dodo's luminous photographs draw the reader into another world from the first turn of the page.
A City Aglow is a warm, dizzying, intimate and overwhelming portrait of Bangkok, photographed by Japanese street photographer Shunji Dodo on numerous visits from the mid-1980s to 2019. Finding parallels with his postwar childhood in central Osaka, Dodo became fascinated by Bangkok and its residents' warmth, vitality and ingenuity. Focusing on a single city, he offers an encompassing, tireless view of life's universal drive to continue, whatever the circumstances.
The book includes an extensive afterword by Dodo and a short essay by Tate senior curator Yasufumi Nakamori, in Japanese and English.
