Kerstin Adams has often accompanied her husband Robert as he photographed the rural West. On these journeys, after making a landscape photograph, he sometimes turned to make another that included her. “Kerstin loves the forest, the prairie and the coast,” he writes, “which is part of my love for her. When we are there, portrait and landscape seem one; she shares nature's glory, and nature is comforted by her care.” A Portrait in Landscapes reproduces a selection of these paired images alongside related views. Spanning nearly forty years, most have not previously been published. Two show Kerstin reading. The volume itself might be understood as a letter, recording their affection for the places they have visited and for each other. The first edition sold out on publication; this second printing comprises 500 copies. Printed in duotone on matte art paper and bound in Japanese cloth, this beautiful small book offers moving testimony to the power of human love.
