An invaluable collection of rare colour photographs by the Japanese master.
Color: Somehow Familiar Places offers a chance to discover rare and previously unpublished colour work by Kazuo Kitai. Divided into two chapters, it begins with photographs of 1970s Japan, a period of fundamental change when “Japan took off its old clothes and put on new ones”, and villages transformed as dramatically as booming cities.
The second chapter contains previously unpublished photographs from an assignment in Paris. Told by his editor to “simply photograph the scenes you always do, children standing alone in the landscape”, Kitai spent two months in France, his first journey abroad, photographing people in Parisian streets.
“When I think about what monochrome and colour photography meant to me, I feel that black and white was the side road of my photographic life, while colour film was the grand boulevard, a road I walked a little hesitantly, a little awkwardly.”
— From Kazuo Kitai's afterword.
