High Fashion comprises photographs Pawel Jaszczuk made between 2008 and 2010 of drunken salarymen sleeping on Tokyo's streets.
Living in Japan at the time, he cycled out after midnight to photograph people and places, considering 1–4 a.m. the best hours. Soon after beginning the project, he published Salaryman with Morel Books in 2009, a black-and-white zine limited to 150 copies that sold out immediately. For this book, he selected images of sleeping workers whose poses recall fashion models, presenting them in the style of a fashion magazine, hence the title High Fashion.
Jaszczuk stresses that the work is not a statement against drinking. He originally wanted to capture the contrast between men in fine suits and dirty streets, but his perspective evolved. He hopes this publication with Zen Foto Gallery offers a humorous, apocalyptic view of an overworked, overstressed society.
