Harry Gruyaert was among the first European photographers to explore colour's creative potential in the 1970s and 1980s. Influenced by American photographers and cinema, he defined a new territory for colour photography: an emotional, non-narrative and boldly graphic way of seeing the world.
 
 
 
In London in 1972, he created the striking TV Shots series by randomly turning a television dial and photographing the distorted images. A later series, Made in Belgium, portrays his ambivalent relationship with his homeland through saturated hues. Born in Antwerp in 1941 and a Magnum Photos member since 1982, he has embraced digital photography in more recent work, finding that it allows greater risks and new ways of capturing light. His images are autonomous and self-contained, often independent of context or thematic logic. This first retrospective volume offers a magnificent overview of his personal pursuit of expressive freedom and the liberation of the senses.
