Born in 1957 in Gamagori, in Japan's Aichi Prefecture, Yamamoto Masao began his artistic training as a painter, studying oil painting under Goro Saito in his hometown. He found in photography the ideal medium for the subject that interested him: capturing images capable of evoking memories.

Small Things in Silence surveys twenty years in the career of one of Japan's most important photographers. In Yamamoto's own words: “I try to capture the moments nobody sees and make photographs from them. When I see them printed, a new story emerges.”
