Capitolio is a cinematic journey through the shadows of Caracas, Venezuela, during the revolution. In the tradition of William Klein's New York and Magnum photographer Robert Frank's The Americans, Christopher Anderson creates an emotional portrait of a time and place on the verge of eruption. Rather than a didactic or journalistic account, he offers a poetic vision of a place where violence and sensuality coexist.
The word Capitolio refers to the domed building that houses a government. Here, Caracas itself becomes a metaphorical capitol. In place of walls, there is decaying modernist architecture built with oil money. It seems to evoke an era of opulence, but a jungle breaks through the cracks, exposing the decay within. The streets stand in for the building's corridors, where human drama and political intrigue take the stage.
