A beautifully produced book celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the Grade II-listed Brutalist icon, the Barbican Estate.
2019 marks fifty years since the first residents moved into London's Barbican Estate. This new book celebrates the unique complex, examining both individual apartment designs and its status as a Brutalist icon. Author and designer Stefi Orazi interviews past and present residents, revealing how life on the estate has changed over the decades.
Designed by Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, the Grade II-listed complex is among the world's best-known examples of Brutalist architecture. Its three towers—Cromwell, Shakespeare and Lauderdale—are among London's tallest residential buildings, and the estate is a city landmark. This comprehensive, beautifully illustrated guide features newly commissioned photographs by Christoffer Rudquist. It examines each of the 140 different dwelling types in detail, with newly drawn illustrations as well as original plans and maps.
Contributions by leading architects and design critics include John Allan of Avanti Architects on the apartments' distinctive construction materials and fittings, and Charles Holland of Charles Holland Architects, co-founder of FAT, on the home and how these concrete towers became such an integral part of Britain's domestic and architectural history.
