Masaki Yamamoto's new photobook, "The Yamamotos," is the follow-up to his sensational 2017 debut book, "Guts."
In black-and-white photographs, Yamamoto documents the daily life of his close-knit family: his parents, sisters, and brothers. Although this series begins after the family moved from their previous one-room social housing apartment to a nearby house, they appear to be just as close-knit as before. Yamamoto's photographs don't shy away from intimate, unflattering, or even shocking moments as the family continues to live in precarious conditions. At the same time, Yamamoto also manages to capture the love, care, and unity that keep the family together.
“Within each of the houses we pass through, different worlds are hidden, and the Yamamotos are in one of these hidden corners. While my previous work, 'Guts,' was a reaffirmation of my own family's habits and lifestyle, 'The Yamamotos' is my examination of family in a new environment, after moving into a detached house. I hope that 'The Yamamotos' will allow people to see family in a new way and reconsider their views on their own families.”
