Alex Llovet presents his most overtly documentary work while retaining the poetic eye and conceptual character that define his practice: a project developed over ten years in the forests surrounding his home.
The forest is the archetype of the wild, representing the untamed. It often becomes a place of escape, a refuge in which to hide and remain anonymous. Through its darkness and deep roots, it also symbolises the unconscious: an ancient magical space where we can connect with elemental powers and rediscover unknown or forgotten parts of ourselves. In the forest, you can escape society, but not yourself.
On Barcelona's outskirts lies one of the world's largest peri-urban parks: the wooded Collserola hills. Both a place of escape and a promised land, these mountains became a kind of Catalan Wild West when the first settlers arrived in the mid-twentieth century, leaving their places of origin in search of new opportunities. Since then, many have ended up here, including the author, for very different reasons. All share something: they live among trees, immersed in the forest and intimately connected to it. Gradually they have domesticated it, modifying the land to meet their needs. The nearby city makes it readily accessible and therefore vulnerable. Yet the forest is powerful and has never ceased exerting invisible forces on its inhabitants, leaving its mark on both their homes and their spirits.
