“Colour is a means of sculpting what I see,” as Degas might surely have said of his pastels, which had nothing to do with dance. “Colour does not illustrate a subject or the scene I am photographing; it has value in itself. It is even the emotion of the photograph.”

From the outset, colour gives the image its radiance. — Excerpt from Alain Macaire's introduction; text by Richard Nonas translated by Brice Maththiessent, with colour photographs.

Lumières Blanches was published in 1986 to accompany the exhibition of the same name at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. That same year, Harry Gruyaert joined the prestigious Magnum agency. The book is one of the most representative works by a great master of colour, who gives it a distinctive leading role in his photographs. An essential work that has influenced generations of street photographers.
