This lavish exhibition catalogue was published by The Met, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Profusely illustrated with striking new photographs, the publication presents more than 120 examples of Kawakubo's designs for Comme des Garçons. The Costume Institute's spring 2017 exhibition examines the work of fashion designer Rei Kawakubo, known for her avant-garde designs and her ability to challenge conventional notions of beauty, good taste and style. The thematic exhibition features approximately 140 examples of Kawakubo's womenswear for Comme des Garçons, from the early 1980s to her most recent collection at the time, many with heads and wigs created and styled by Julien d'Ys. The galleries illustrate the designer's revolutionary experiments with the "in-between": the space between boundaries. Kawakubo's work is organised into nine aesthetic expressions of in-betweenness: Absence/Presence; Design/Not Design; Fashion/Antifashion; Model/Multiple; High/Low; Then/Now; Self/Other; Object/Subject; and Clothes/Not Clothes.
